Let me save you some time

Just got in from Podcamp Ottawa, and it was a great day. Saw old friends, made new ones, and participated in great conversations.

After having now attended or helped organize 8 or so podcamps, as well as several other podcasting events, I thought I’d use the spirit of sharing to save some time to those of you about to attend an event like this.

Before you leave your house, you need to google the following topics :

  • Monetizing your podcast
  • Quitting your day job to podcast
  • How podcast ad revenue will make you independently weathly.

Now take all the pages of results for these topics, and print them (Sorry trees, but I’ve a point to make). Make sure you print it clearly, on good quality paper.

Now take all those pages, and arrange them on your floor or wall so that they are all visible.

Now, using a red Sharpie ™ marker, circle each search result where someone had a successful outcome for one of those three points.

Visit those links, and very carefully read and implement what they say.

Then, when you attend the event,

Don’t freaking bring it up! ok?

    Forget monetizing your podcast — I want to learn more about monetizing my lunch dates and other social events. After all, podcasting is fun so I’m happy to do that for free. Between pain and socializing, I choose pain — so I might as well be paid for it.

    Understanding the business of what people are putting great effort into is important for many, and may increase in importance as people need to find income to replace what’s lost due to the economy.

    I think that it is very silly to say that the subject of building a business around people’s passion shouldn’t be talked about.

    Do they pay cash or just give you free markers?

    Joking aside, it is certainly possible to connect with a sponsor, but it’s obviously no easier than in any other endeavor.

  8. As someone who at last count has helped organize at least 6 podcamps, attended over 12, not including PAB and Barcamp, I agree that these same old questions come up time and again. Is it wishful thinking that someone will have cracked the code and there is a secret, all-access pass to the coffers to Fort Knox? Sure. But reality has shown, time and again, these are tools for implementing your ideas,not ideas in and of themselves. It has been and will continue to be hard work to produce quality content, whether for personal or business purposes.

    Short cuts are for wimps, anyway.

  9. Might as well tell people to go to the internet and teach their kids how to swim while giving their kids a bath. Do the swim lessons before you take the kids to the swim pool.

    It would save a lot of time with all those lifeguards if they knew everyone already new how to swim.

    Point is: Podcamps are more like swim lessons than the Olympics Games.

    Furthermore, we all came to live Michael Phelps because he was gracious.

    Perhaps you should start a Pod-lympics to come after the Pod-CAMPers — for those who are prequalified.

    The medium isn’t reason enough to collect anymore IMHO. When Podcasting was new, when we didn’t know anything about it… it was our life raft for finding people who “got” what we all were searching to share. All looking to move the medium forward.

    Now… Rather then having podcamps, I think the pod-age has moved on past the technology.

    We as content producers need to evolve to hosting *camps about whatever topic inspired us to start sharing…

    That’s where the innovation is… that’s where the mythical internet money is. It’s in finding those tribes who are willing to support our passion for the endeavors we are developing media about.
