The Creepy Umpteenth Wave

Here’s some advice for businesses and people looking at twitter as part of the social media experience.

Do I think twitter will help your business? Sure, why not?

Will it help your “Make money now!” website get more hits? Maybe..

Do I care if it will? Actually, no. Sorry, I really mean it. I couldn’t give a rat’s ass if your business gets better or worse because of twitter.

Why? Because like any online social club (that’s what it is, don’t kid yourself), the relevant connections are the ones I made first (ie- the “real” ones). When I joined twitter, I linked up with my 30-40 online friends, and added more existing friends as they came onto the system. For me, connections on twitter were a series of waves…

  • 1st Wave  : “Hey! Let’s hook up on twitter” – These first connections are the strongest, because they started with one of us deciding elsewhere, to connect on twitter.
  • 2nd Wave : “They’re being followed by someone I dig, I’ll follow them”. Fair enough.
  • 3rd Wave :  “They’re following someone I like, i’ll follow them.”Almost sad, but still quite acceptable..

there are a few more waves, depending on how your social networking develops, then the almost entirely useless :

  • Creepy Umpteenth Wave : “Let’s have an app work on the follower/followed ratio, divide than by the number of words tweeted, multiply by a personality factor ……etc….etc…”

The easiest way to spot someone surfing the Creepy Umpteenth Wave, is to look at their link-heavy twitter stream, it will look something like this:

The most unfortunate thing about the Creepy Umpteenth Wave(tm) is that some “Social Media Experts” *cough*… want people/companies to start there.

So here’s my point. Use the tools first to connect with your existing clients/friends/users. Plan your approach in this space, even at 140 characters a shot, it’s easy to look like an idiot. Ride the successive waves, and build a real presence.

If your “Social media expert” wants you to start with the Creepy Umpteenth Wave(tm), then your expert knows very little about social media. It’s time to find a new self-declared expert.

Brilliant! I knew there had to be something more than an @creepnewguy behind Julien’s tweet. I’ll help spread the word.
