Darn

So after much anticipation, my macbook pro finally arrived today. Opened the box, lovely machine, powered it up, and heard the Apple chime combined with a high-pitched noise. Uhoh.

The noise is loudest when the brightness is on full, sorta goes away as I turn it down. Bleah.

Called Apple. Very friendly people, had me do some preliminary checks.. It needs to be replaced. WAhh!

These things happen I guess, but the buildup and impatience to get my new machine was wasted on a defective unit. Kinda takes the wind out of the “new owner experience”..Hmmpf

Apple handled it well (I mean, other than sending me a defective machine), and even refunded the extra I paid for expedited shipping. Meh

So now I wait for the shipping people to pick this one up and for Apple to ship the replacement. sigh..

Guess I’ll get some real work done this afternoon after all… sniff

Hmmm had the same issue with my Nano, it was DOA Xmas morning, the replacement died after 4 weeks, and am now on number 3 … my confidence in switching to an Apple laptop is a little shakier now.

I had a great experience buying a refurb’d iPod 5G – I’ve recommended it to others and they’ve have great experiences too.. I’m willing to think this is a blip and the next one will be fine.

Having used nothing but IBM (now Lenovo) Thinkpads since 1993 – I’ve sung their praises forever, but I’m sure some people have received non-working units. These things happen..

  6. Hey Bob,

While it certainly is a bummer to get a defective machine shipped to you, I’ve heard of many manufacturers that would force you to go through an elaborate series of repair requests and warranty claims as soon as the unit was in your possession.

I’m glad to see that Apple replaced your defective machine outright after only one phone call, and even refunded your expedited shipping!

After this the anticipation must be agonizing, but you’ll be happy with the results when you finally get it. – Bruce

  7. Apple’s customer service really rocks. I have had nothing but good experiences with them.
